Imperial, with astonishing foresight, chartered two German Junkers aircraft to haul men and equipment from Edmonton. There had been bush flying in northern Ontario and Labrador during and after the First World War, but the Junkers were designed to carry freight as well as passengers. They marked the first regular industrial air service anywhere in Canada. The Junkers were far ahead of their time.

In that summer of 1900, Bell and Camsell paddled into the rivers and lakes southeast of Great Bear Lake and found cobalt, silver, and, near Great Slave Lake, traces of gold. * Bell's geological report was published in a mining journal, but no one *Camsell has left us a record of the trip in his autobiography, and it provides us with insight into standard white attitudes toward aboriginals at that time. At one location, Camsell wrote, he and Bell left the trees east of Great Bear Lake and journeyed out into the treeless tundra.

The partners proved that cat trains would work, though they were slow and prohibitively expensive. The ice had scarcely melted off sled runners when a dozen competing firms began scheming cheaper ways of hauling goods. Frank Sedore and Red Hamilton believed that ordinary trucks could do almost everything crawlers could, and a lot faster and cheaper. In January 1939 they drove a Chevrolet truck across Great Slave Lake from Fort Resolution, taking eight days. Then the brothers Alex and Babe Feldman drove a Fargo truck with a caboose from Grimshaw, Alberta.
